Hogwarts Legacy: A Through Time

"Ah, based on all the chatter when you entered the common room, 

you're the new fifth-year. I'm Ominis... Ominis Gaunt."

Ominis A. Gaunt (c. 1875) was a pure-blood wizard and a member of the House of Gaunt. He was a Slytherin student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1886 to the 1890s. Despite being born into a family of dark wizards, he developed a deep distrust of the Dark Arts and often found himself in conflicts with his friend Sebastian Sallow over how they should be used.

Later life

Ominis married his best friend, Sebastian's twin sister, Anne Sallow, and had two boys with her: Lucius and Ominis Jr. He took his wife's last name, 'Sallow,' himself.

In 1910, Anne's health worsened, and Ominis was on the verge of tears. He didn't want to lose his wife and the mother of his children, but unfortunately, the next day, Anne was already dead, and Ominis wrote a letter to Sebastian, who blamed himself for her sister's death.

The epilogue mentions that Ominis is dating Lauren's best friend, Julianne Pratt, after he has recovered from the death of his wife, Anne.

Personality and traits

Being born blind (a possible effect of the Gaunts' inbreeding), his parents tried every spell and magical property to make him appear a “normal” Pureblood. Though he can spot shapes and figures.

After graduating from Hogwarts, his family tried to force him into marriage to someone in his family to keep the line pure. Ominis refuses, and he is disowned. He is a total neat freak. He likes clean areas and yells at his roommates about keeping the room clean. Most of the mess comes from Sebastian. 

He can read people on an empathetic level without ever actually using sight. Before arriving at Hogwarts, the staff gave him special books where his wand speaks to him so he can read them in his mind. He loves eating sweets because it gives him a sense of happiness, since he doesn’t have a perfect home life. He has a playful side that he rarely lets out, and his new friend, Lauren, brings it out of him. He is blunt because he cares. He doesn’t want to lose anyone he cares about, even his best friend, Sebastian.

Magical abilities and skills

• Dark Arts: Ominis was once forced into casting the Cruciatus Curse by his family. However, unlike his family, he grew to detest the Dark Arts and opposed their practice.

• Parseltongue: Ominis was a Parselmouth, meaning he could magically talk to snakes, an ability that resided in his family tree. He has used this ability twice.

• Defense Against the Dark Arts: Despite being blind, Ominis was still capable of defending himself against the Dark Arts, managing to beat off waves of Inferi in the catacombs of Feldcroft. How he managed this is unknown, but his wand was described as "sentient", so his skill may have been linked to that.

• Love: Though certainly not one of Ominis's most obvious qualities, he held a great amount of deep, brotherly care for his close friend, Sebastian Sallow, as well as fear for the dark path that he was going down. Even though he understood Sebastian to be manipulating him, he still felt a duty to stop his descent into darkness as the only person he trusted. Furthermore, after the traumatic experiences of his childhood, he made a genuine and radical attempt to distance himself from his family and their culture of the Dark Arts. He was in love with Lauren Bones; however, she chose his best friend, Sebastian, over him.

Family:

He has no close connection with his family anymore because of the dark arts and blood purity. Ominis was often abused and tortured by not using dark magic. After graduation, he cut off his family completely and changed his name to his best friend's last name, "Sallow".

Marvolo is Ominis's oldest brother and his parents' favorite child. He tortured Ominis by casting a Crucio on him and telling him that he was "a disgrace to the family".

Sebastian Sallow was Ominis's oldest friend. However, their relationship became more tenuous in their fifth year with Sebastian's continued exploration of the Dark Arts, which Ominis regularly advised against. In the end, their relationship suffered so badly that Ominis found it difficult to consider Sebastian a friend anymore, even though he did continue to worry about him greatly.

Lauren was Ominis's new friend and his former girlfriend, who started late in their fifth year. They had a rocky beginning when Ominis caught them outside of the Undercroft, which they had been shown by Sebastian; however, Ominis was the first to know the truth about how Lauren got to Hogwarts and what she is looking for in the Undercroft. Ominis has a crush on Lauren while Lauren has feelings for his best friend, Sebastian. After Lauren broke up with Sebastian because he was using her only to find a cure for her sister, Anne, Ominis, and Lauren started seeing each other more often. They started dating each other while Ominis helped her find new pieces to fix the Time-Turner, but Sebastian was pissed off and angry after learning that Lauren was dating Ominis. He started dating another girl from Hogwarts to get Lauren jealous.

Poppy Sweeting (Swaunting)

Poppy was Ominis' ex-fiancé and former classmate. They started dating after he broke up with Lauren, and then they got engaged because Ominis tried to forget Lauren while Poppy was in love with Ominis and didn't know that he still had feelings for Lauren. Months later, after they were still engaged, Poppy and her friends had a huge battle with a Dark Arts Professor Isidora Morganach, who wanted Lauren and Sebastian's unborn daughter herself; however, Isidora was eventually killed by Lauren herself. In the epilogue, it was mentioned that Ominis broke off the engagement with Poppy and that Poppy always knew that Ominis had feelings for Lauren and not her. Poppy felt sad seeing Ominis so lonely, and that's why they got engaged. However, Poppy was indeed in love with Ominis, but she did not want to marry a man who didn't love her back.

Anne Sallow

Anne was Ominis's closest friend and also his late wife. They had been friends for a long time after Ominis met Sebastian, who introduced him as his new friend from Hogwarts. After Ominis breaks off the engagement with Poppy, he starts dating Anne; however, Sebastian at the beginning seems a little bit weird that his best friend is dating his twin sister. In the epilogue, it was mentioned that they are married and have a three-year-old son, Lucius. Later, having another son, Ominis Junior, however, Anne died during childbirth later on and Ominis was heartbroken.
