Hogwarts Legacy: A Through Time

"There's someone who isn't me inside."

                                           — Sebastian Sallow

Sebastian Albert "Seb" Sallow (b. 1874) was a Scottish wizard and a Slytherin student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the late 19th century. Born to two professors who died when he was young, he and his sister, Anne, were raised by their uncle Solomon Sallow, an ex-auror. When Victor Rookwood cursed Anne, she developed a seemingly incurable illness. He tried everything from Nurse Blainey to St Mungo's to no avail and eventually became convinced that the Dark Arts were the last hope for her.

From an early age, he mastered the Unforgivable Curses and considered other curses, such as Confringo, among his favorites. His quest to unravel the secrets of Dark Magic, justified by finding his sister's cure, eventually culminated in the murder of his uncle; however, Sebastian was not expelled from Hogwarts and was not sent to trial at the Ministry of Magic because his sister, Anne, told them that their uncle died in his sleep.

Biography

Early life

Sebastian was born in 1874 or 1875 alongside a twin sister, Anne. They were raised by two professors who ingrained in them a thirst for knowledge and a sense of optimism and open-mindedness, which Sebastian would later hope to emulate. Their parents died when they were young after a lamp in their cellar poisoned them with an undetectable toxin. They were taken in by their uncle, Solomon Sallow, who lived in a home in Feldcroft.

First to fourth years (1886–1890)

On 1 September 1886, at eleven, he and his sister started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where they were sorted into Slytherin houses.

He became best friends with Ominis Gaunt, a fellow Slytherin in his year, and he, Ominis, and Anne would often go to the Undercroft, a secret area within Hogwarts Castle that Ominis knew about through his family, to play Gobstones and hang out. As Ominis himself was deeply uncomfortable with his family owing to his childhood experiences, Sebastian entertained him at their home in Feldcroft, developing an even closer bond. They singed their eyebrows the first time Sebastian and Ominis practiced the Blasting Curse. As a student, Sebastian was known for wanting to expand his knowledge beyond Hogwarts' main curriculum.

Sebastian's life changed before his fifth year at Hogwarts, when Anne was attacked and cursed during a raid on their house in Feldcroft, presumably by Ranrok's Loyalists, but actually by Victor Rookwood, resulting in her suffering from an illness. It left her in constant pain and unable to attend Hogwarts. Sebastian wanted to cure her, and after trying everything from Nurse Blainey to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, she came to confide in the Dark Arts as her last hope. After this incident, Sebastian strongly hated goblins, preferring them dead rather than alive.

Sebastian became one of the top duellists within the Crossed Wands duelling club organized by Lucan Brattleby. He was typically considered one of the most fearsome duellists in Hogwarts at the time.

Fifth year (1890–1891)

Befriending the new fifth-year (Lauren Bones)

On 2 September 1890, the first day of his fifth year, he was duelling with Leander Prewett in Classroom 3C when the skull of Dinah Hecat's Hebridean Black skeleton was dislodged. Hecat levitated the skull back into place and reprimanded them.

During the Defence Against the Dark Arts class, he became acquainted with the transfer student (Lauren Bones) whom he had been assigned to duel. Impressed by her skill, he invited her to the unsanctioned Crossed Wands duelling club. Sebastian was a possible combatant during the Troll attack on Hogsmeade later that day, had he been invited by Lauren to visit Hogsmeade.

Sebastian enlisted Lauren's help to enter the Restricted Section, where Sebastian hoped to glean more information on a cure for Anne. They were caught when Peeves reported them to the librarian Agnes Scribner. Lauren continued to explore the Restricted Section while Sebastian went up to take the blame, with Lauren finding the Athenaeum, and by extension, the Map Chamber. When Lauren returned to the surface, they hid while Scribner confronted Sebastian, who took the blame and did not reveal Lauren's presence.

When the friendship between Lauren and Sebastian became more apparent, Sebastian introduced her to the Undercroft and taught her Confringo. Nobody except Anne and Ominis Gaunt knew about the Undercroft until this point, so this only cemented the level of trust between the two. Sebastian later brought Lauren to his house, where they had a confrontational meeting with Solomon Sallow, leaving Sebastian bitter and upset. After this, Sebastian showed Lauren the place that Anne had been cursed: a house up on a hill in Feldcroft. They fought off some goblins surrounding the house together and found that inside it was an ancient magic passageway to the Undercroft. When they re-entered the Undercroft, they found a triptych that contained hints of locations linked to the Keepers, with two of the panels missing. Sebastian and Lauren went to investigate the area depicted in the remaining panel.

Infiltrating the Overlook

Sebastian found that the panel of the triptych linked to a place called the Overlook near an abandoned mine that was currently the headquarters of Ranrok's Loyalists. He invited Lauren to see for themselves, and they started a mission to infiltrate the mine. They fought off various Loyalists and discovered an ancient room that had belonged to Isidora Morganach, with a journal entry that spoke of her mission to heal people. They also found a second part of the triptych.

They returned to the Undercroft through an enchanted stone surface similar to the one in Isidora Morganach's house. There, Sebastian said that he recognized where the triptych linked, but that there would be more trouble in going there. As Lauren brought up their private dealings with Lodgok, a goblin, he lashed out at her for trusting goblins – the same people who, as Sebastian assumed, had cursed his sister, Anne, several years ago.

Break-in of Slytherin's Scriptorium

When Sebastian heard about the existence of Slytherin's Scriptorium, he enlisted Lauren, who was unsure, and Ominis Gaunt's help in discovering the chamber. Before accessing the chamber, however, the trio met a door that required the use of the Cruciatus Curse to pass. Sebastian was willing to both cast or accept the curse if it meant discovering the secrets within, as he believed they could be used to help Anne. Ominis was reluctant throughout the entire journey, and once they were finished, he urged Sebastian to end his quest. Sebastian did not.

Sebastian discovered Slytherin's Spellbook inside the Scriptorium, a compendium written by Salazar Slytherin that gave insights into Lauren's assignments in a nearby cave.

Accessing the relic

Sebastian asked Lauren to join him in this cave, where they fought spiders and found this medieval student's notes hinting at the existence of a dark relic that could cure ailments. This made Sebastian even more determined to discover this relic, which he eventually did, though the pair realized they had been followed by Ominis, who urged Sebastian again to stop his meddling with the Dark Arts, but Sebastian continued.

Shortly after leaving, they found Feldcroft ravaged by Ranrok's Loyalists. Sebastian and Lauren fought off various goblins before finding a wounded Anne Sallow in a field outside their home. Anne was about to be killed by an unidentified goblin, so Sebastian used the Imperius Curse to force the goblin to commit suicide. After this, Sebastian attempted to raise Anne to the ground, but she refused his help. Solomon came over, evicted Sebastian from their household, and forbade him from coming near them again.

Skirmish in the Feldcroft Catacomb

Near the end of the 18901891 school year, Sebastian entered the Feldcroft Catacomb to seize the relic. After acquiring it, he manipulated Inferi within the catacombs to serve him, an action that threatened the safety of the whole village. He was followed by Lauren, who had to battle through the Inferi to reach him, and then condemned his behavior. They were then discovered by Solomon Sallow, who summoned the relic before nonverbally destroying it. Sebastian attacked his uncle, leading to a duel between the three wizards, which eventually resulted in Solomon's death. Anne Sallow arrived at the catacomb, attacked her brother with the Banishing Charm, destroyed the remaining Inferi, and Appeared away with her uncle's corpse. Lauren saw wounded Sebastian and ran to his side. She carefully ripped open his shirt and took a wand in her hand, then said a spell, and his wound was healed, but not completely, and they appeared out there in the forbidden forest.

Lauren never told anyone about how Sebastian killed his uncle in the Feldcroft Catacomb; only later, Ominis became aware of this but did not say anything.

Following the memorial ceremony for Prof. Eleazar Fig and Headmaster Black, Lauren told Sebastian that it was Victor Rookwood, and not a goblin, who had cursed his sister. Later, Sebastian apologized to Lauren for calling her ignorant, and Lauren accepted his apology.

Later life

He married Lauren Bones, a half-blood wizard, and has two children. They live in the 21st century after traveling away from the 19th century with the Time Turner. He is a DADA Professor at Hogwarts.

Nature and attributes

Sebastian was charismatic and fearless of detention and breaking the rules. He was courageous and resolved to pursue his plans, always unbothered by loss. He was ready to employ the Dark Arts to help his sister and explain her situation. He did not consider magic as good or evil, but rather as a means to reach his goals. He was bright, a feature his parents also had. He leaned on their memory to stay open-minded and steady, following and using facts as a direction.

He puts up a charming front, but deep down, he is insecure about himself because Solomon compares him to his father, which he wonders why that is a bad thing when he looked up to him and that he was a great man before his passing. As Solomon calls him stubborn and headstrong.

Magical capabilities and talents

Lauren Raven: "Sebastian informed me to see you about a club."

Lucan Brattleby: "If Sebastian vows for you, that's all I need to know."

— Sebastian Sallow's reputation at Hogwarts.

  • Love: Despite his many faults, Sebastian had an enormous devotion to his twin sister, Anne Sallow, to the point that he would willingly sacrifice his own code of morality to attempt to save her. For two years, he gave his full attention to restoring Anne's health, refusing to accept his uncle's claims that she could not be saved. His love for his new fifth-year girl, Lauren, was pure, and he wanted to be with her. Eventually, they married and moved to the 21st century.
  • Duelling: The champion of the Crossed Wands duelling club and one of the most skillful duellists in Hogwarts, Sebastian was recognized by his fellow students as an accomplished and fearsome combatant. He could personally duel his uncle Solomon, an accomplished Auror, and countless battle-hardened goblins.
  • Charisma and manipulation: Sebastian was highly charismatic and confident, which impressed his fellow students and allowed him to sway and use his closest friends. He could convince Ominis Gaunt to open Slytherin's Scriptorium, which Ominis was initially heavily reluctant to do, by appealing to Ominis's passion for learning the truth about his missing aunt. When challenged on his use of the Dark Arts, he successfully avoided a direct promise to both Ominis and Lauren that whatever mission he was doing would be his last venture. Then he would stop, before simply continuing to push the boundary further. Solomon Sallow was the only individual Sebastian could not sway, which irritated him greatly. This leads Lauren to split up with him for a while.
  • Charms: As a student at Hogwarts, Sebastian was taught a variety of charms. He also knew the Unlocking Charm, which he frequently used to enter the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts Library before Agnes Scribner added another layer of protection to the lock.
  • Dark Arts: Sebastian's earliest known awareness of the Dark Arts was when he was a child and learned that his uncle Solomon had cast an Unforgivable Curse during his time as an Auror. By age fifteen, he could cast all three Unforgivable Curses himself, even though they required extraordinary willpower and a real desire to commit evil to cast. Sebastian's range of spells was notably offensive, favoring spells such as the Blasting Curse, and often jumping to the Unforgivable Curses by instinct. Even as a young wizard, he was addicted to dark spell books such as Slytherin's Spellbook, and enthralled by darker tomes such as Magick Moste Evile. Sebastian justified his interest in the Dark Arts by claiming it was to find a cure for his sister Anne; however, not only did Anne not wish to be cured in this way, but Sebastian also seemed to genuinely enjoy the Dark Arts, regardless, finding it "incredible" that he was able to possess Inferi in the catacombs of Feldcroft. It also infected his relationship with Lauren, whom he loved and cared about most.
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts: After marriage to Lauren Raven, he officially quits Dark Arts and learns how to defend themselves against all aspects of the Dark Arts. He eventually became a Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor in the 21st century.
  • Apparition: Despite it being on the Hogwarts curriculum in the sixth year, he was capable of Apparition.

Possessions

  • Wand: Sebastian owned a wand, which he likely acquired from Gerbold Ollivander at eleven, like most other wizards.
  • Owl: Sebastian owned an owl which he used to send posts to his friends, most notably the close friend he acquired in his fifth year.
  • Crest: Sebastian was given this crest by his sister Anne, which he has kept with him ever since.
  • Slytherin's Spellbook: After discovering this spellbook in Slytherin's Scriptorium, Sebastian confiscated it for himself. Through it, he learned much more about the Dark Arts, including the Unforgivable Curses. The spellbook was destroyed by her sister, Anne Sallow.
  • Antique: Sebastian pilfered this antique, which he thought could save Anne, from the Feldcroft Catacomb, and used it to summon Inferi. Solomon Sallow destroyed it.
  • Dark relic: Sebastian pilfered this relic, which he thought was capable of saving Anne, from the Feldcroft Catacomb, and used it to summon Inferi. It was destroyed by Solomon Sallow.

Quotes

"You know I can't have enough of you."

— Sebastian to Lauren in the Undercroft.

"When I wake up every day, I want to be a better man for you.
You are the light that has erased my darkness. Because when I first met you,
I had found the happiness and joy that I was made for. I had found the sensation and joy that I had sought after my whole life.
Not knowing that you would be the source of it. When I told you we were meant to meet each other, I didn't lie. And I swear if you let me, every day, I want to prove that to you."

— Sebastian to Lauren in The Room of Requirement.

"I think you understand me better than anyone,
even if we haven't known each other for long. Since the first time I saw you ..."

— Sebastian to Lauren in the Slytherin common room.

"You've been on my list since the day I met you."

— Sebastian to Lauren.

"And as long as I'm here, you don't need to."

— Sebastian to Lauren in The Chamber of Secrets.

"I want to wake up every day beside you. Listening to your jokes and problems,
I don't want to call you just my girlfriend or friend anymore. I want to call you my wife!
I want to inseminate my seed into you so that you can have my child. Our child!
Would you give me the honor of growing old with you and living peacefully in our little world forever?"

— Sebastian to Lauren in The Room of Requirement after a proposal to her.

"Touch her and you're dead!"

— Sebastian to Tom Riddle.

"I waited for you, and you never came... You
know what's going to happen..."

— Sebastian to Lauren.

Relationships

Family

Children:

Samantha Anne Sallow

Sam is Sebastian's firstborn child and the eldest daughter of Lauren Raven.

Albert Benjamin Sallow

Albert was Sebastian and Lauren's second child and only son. It was mentioned that Albert was sorted into Gryffindor's house like her mother once was.

Parents:

Mr. and Mrs. Sallow

Mr and Mrs Sallow were Anne and Sebastian's parents. Their parents died when he and Anne were very young. They were dedicated professors as they spent nearly every waking moment in their cellar library, but died before 1890, after a lamp in their cellar poisoned them with an undetectable toxin.

Siblings:

Anne Sallow

Anne was Sebastian's twin sister. Sebastian dedicated two years of his life to a pure attempt to heal his sister, Anne, though his efforts were arguably misguided, as Anne did not wish to be cured by the Dark Arts. Sebastian, however, was willing to go to any means to save her, viewing magic not as 'good and evil', but as a tool to meet his ends. After Solomon's murder, Sebastian's relationship with Anne completely fractured: Anne was utterly devastated that he would murder his uncle, and Sebastian was remorseful that he had only increased her suffering. She left their home and left a letter for her brother, in which she said that she still loved him, but that it was unlikely that she would ever be able to forgive him. Although Sebastian was willing to keep his distance from Anne for now, he retained hope that one day he and his twin would be able to negotiate. She was healed by Lauren Raven; however, years later, after Sebastian left with Lauren for the 21st century, he got a letter from Ominis that Anne had died, and Sebastian blamed himself for leaving her. After her death, Sebastian writes a letter from Ominis stating that he could come to the 21st century and live with them.

Other family members:

Solomon Sallow

Solomon is both Anne and Sebastian's paternal uncle. Sebastian's relationship with his uncle and guardian, Solomon Sallow, was notoriously poor. Solomon constantly berated Sebastian's stubbornness and refusal to accept that Anne Sallow could not be saved, detesting his nephew's involvement with the Dark Arts. Meanwhile, Sebastian was unwilling to accept his uncle's reluctance to fully treat his sister, viewing him as "letting her suffer". Solomon Sallow was the only individual who did not fall prey to Sebastian's natural charisma, correctly perceiving him as intelligent and dangerous. After dabbling with the Dark Arts, he evicted Sebastian from their home and forbade him from interacting with his sister, after which their relations fully eroded. In the end, Sebastian starts a duel with his uncle after he destroys the relic that could have saved Anne, and despite Solomon's last attempts to make Sebastian see reason, Sebastian ends up murdering him in a rage. Despite all that had happened between them, however, Sebastian still never wanted to kill Solomon and was genuinely remorseful for what had happened. Later, in revealed by Sebastian's mother's letters that his uncle had feelings for his mom a long time ago, but his mom chose his father.

Julianne Pratt

Julianne is both Sebastian's and Anne's distant relative, who ends up with Ominis Gaunt in the epilogue.

Romances:

Lauren Bones

Sebastian Sallow: "That duel was quite something. Everyone'll be talking about it."

Lauren Bones: "It was certainly good practice."

Sebastian Sallow: "Practice? Felt more like I was dueling a professional."

— Sebastian and Lauren talk after their first Defence Against the Dark Arts class.

Lauren Bones was Sebastian's closest friend and future wife from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lauren and Sebastian met at Hogwarts in the corridor after Lauren's time jump in the past. He introduced himself to her and asked if she was lost because he had never seen her there. From the long time travel, Lauren passed out in front of him, and Sebastian screamed for help. He didn't know what to do or what had happened to her. He stroked her face gently and looked at her. Professor Fig was the first to arrive and took the girl to the hospital. Sebastian only watched and was worried.

Months later, Sebastian and Lauren became the closest friends within their fifth year and a companion to many of his engagements. They shared various secrets, with Sebastian informing them about the existence of the Undercroft and his life story, and Lauren telling Sebastian about her life, leaving out her time traveling here.
It was mentioned in the epilogue that Lauren and Sebastian live in the 21st century because Lauren missed her family and didn't want to use the time-turner too often.

Imelda Reyes

Imelda Reyes: "You love Lauren still? Don't you??"

Sebastian: "Yes."

Imelda Reyes: "She is a lucky girl then!"

— Imelda and Sebastian talk about Lauren.

Imelda was Sebastian's classmate and former girlfriend. They dated for a short time before Lauren and after they broke up, but it ended after Sebastian and Lauren got back together again. She and Sebastian remained good friends after that.

Friends

Ominis Gaunt

Ominis was Sebastian's oldest friend, and like a brother, he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with him. Sebastian found himself very quickly to be the only person that Ominis could trust, as Ominis had no good relations with his own family. Sebastian would invite Ominis to his home in Feldcroft, and they quickly formed a close, brotherly bond.

Sebastian considered Ominis his close friend, but this didn't stop him from manipulating and lying to him to further his goals. In their fifth year at Hogwarts, Sebastian could convince Ominis to open Slytherin's Scriptorium, which Ominis was heavily uncomfortable with, so that Sebastian could acquire a cure for Anne. Additionally, Sebastian constantly promised to avoid venturing deeper into the Dark Arts while only continuing to do so, and because of this, there were repeated conflicts between them. Ominis was strongly attached to Sebastian and continued to defend his actions, even if he did not fully approve of them.

The final straw for their relationship was the murder of Solomon Sallow. After that, Ominis was disappointed in Sebastian and wanted to turn him in. However, Lauren didn't want to, and they decided not to tell anybody about Sebastian killing his uncle.

It was mentioned in the epilogue that after the death of his wife, Anne, Ominis moved to the 21st century with his two sons.
